Water softeners have been a reliable solution for removing limescale from water for many years. They use a process called ion exchange to achieve this. In ion exchange, hardness ions (such as lime) in the water are swapped with sodium or potassium ions (from salt). The resin beads within the softener are saturated with sodium ions, which replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water as it passes through. As a result, the calcium and magnesium attach to the resin, effectively softening the water. This process also increases the sodium content in the water, which may affect its taste.
